Raising a business - Babies and business, they’re not so different

Is it the end of your financial year today? Like many others, it’s ours and the warehouse are busy counting IBCs, drums and jerrycans for the stock-take.

Our in-house year-end process is simple and automated, passed to the accountants, then job done. But from a personal perspective, it is quite a milestone and I always feel emotional about it. It’s almost like your child is another year older, growing fast, sometimes needing more support than ever and other times running along at high speeds without any hand-holding. Again, like a child, it feels like you never stop worrying, planning and dreaming about how they will continue to develop.

Will they stop needing you? Will they ever stop asking for or needing more financial support and general guidance? I guess, like a child - it probably won’t ever end! The strategic and financial responsibility will always be there as long as the relationship is too.

At the moment we’re thinking about having another piece of bespoke software created. This aim is to be able to manage our customer relationships and product offerings from start to finish in one application rather than using multiple systems. As part of the process I am sure there will be some ‘teething problems’ see – another ‘business and babies’ similarity!
