Driver’s mate for the day

This week I decided to ditch my desk in favour of one of our PurePac cabs. Having not visited many of our customers for a while, I had a full day out with one of our drivers, making customer deliveries and collections. The point of the exercise was to see first-hand how we manage our customer deliveries but mainly understanding how we undertake our collections. I wanted to see whether we need to adapt or change our processes. I found the day out very insightful. It was great to see the goods-in/out processes and meet some of our customers’ key operational teams.

As much as I enjoyed being a driver’s mate, I question whether I’d want to drive a large goods vehicle (LGV) daily. More specifically, I think the question should be – Would other drivers want me driving an LGV?! The thing is, I did have a go at driving once years ago. Unfortunately, I nearly gave another artic driver a heart attack when I was trying to park up in front of his cab, he didn’t think I was going to stop in time. I still remember him doing the ‘cross sign’.

So, the first moral of today’s post is – understand your business processes from top to bottom. And secondly, know your strengths – perhaps LGV manoeuvring isn’t mine? I’ll happily ‘stay in my lane’.
